Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on what I should do next. To give some context I had a family emergency that required me to miss a day. I have been at this job for 2 months, the job is a midnight shift stocking shelves. I work with one other person during my shift, hes been working there for 2 years and is always complaining about how our boss is managing the store and how he treats him, recently I had to miss a day due to a family emergency which ended up me unfortunately calling out. I'm going to share images of our conversation.

More information about my aunt's situation (the family emergency), she was getting kicked out where she was living suddenly so I had to go help her pack her things and move practically everything, she has some sort of scoliosis in her back and recently diagnosed with breast cancer, she starts panting just going up 12 or so stairs. No one else in the family helped her. I don't regret my decision.

Now the only concern I have right now is whats going to happen at this meeting and if hes going to violate my labor rights. It doesn't seem like hes going to pay me and if I don't attend I'm worried he'll fire me.

At this point he has ignored my message.

If you have any suggestions that I should talk to him about or any advice on what I should do I'm open to hearing it, and also did I do anything wrong? Am I in the wrong?

I've missed a total of 2 days. First day being in a lot of pain + sleep deprived.

Fyi I live in the state of Idaho and I'm paid hourly.

Edit: also my coworker also says that our boss only expects us to miss 1 day in a year. Which I personally find wild. I'm going to audio record my meeting with him if I do end up going.

Edit 2: I live in a small town with very little job opportunities, not trying to lose the job but also I hate being mistreated, very conflicting feelings.

*******Edit 3: Firstly I'd like to thank all of you for commenting, I appreciate the time you have dedicated towards commenting. After reading 2 hours worth of comments 10 hours after it was posted I'd like to make a few clarifications, Every time I'm at work I get the job done with my coworker on avg 2 hours before our official clock out time, I've never mistreated anyone poorly at my job. My coworker has called out 3 times in 1 month when I first started, which gives me hope on not being fired.

Also I didn't think trying to reschedule a better meeting time that worked for both of us was a bad idea, I was trying to think about his schedule and mine.

I did get all social cues from his texts and did understand the severity of the situation, my way of going about it might have been a bad decision.

I was just wondering since I was coming in on a day off if I'd be getting paid, I didn't think the question was a bad one and this is what I was mostly wondering about, if asking was a bad idea.

From what I'll take from you all is this,

1. Dont over explain
2. Go in and apologize and explain why I thought it was important to me to help my aunt
3. I'll be sure to conduct myself differently when faced with a similar situation like this
4. I've already gone ahead and applied for 1 other job since thats all that is hiring around me, (interview went very well btw, just 2 week notice at current job might have thrown it off due to his hiring time restraints)
5. Since idaho is a 1 side consent party I'm going to audio record the meeting
6. Im going to a military recruiter after the meeting

The other week my 74-year-old mother told me that she and my dad had finally finished their wills, medical directives, and burial plans. They met with a lawyer, wrote everything out, and made it official. I had been asking them to do this for a while because they both have a number of medical issues.

I have two older siblings. The oldest lives with my parents and has for most of his adult life. He works full-time and is active in his community, but has struggled with anxiety, depression, agoraphobia, and is financially irresponsible. I’ve privately had opinions about some of his reasons for never really leaving home, but ultimately it wasn’t my business, so I stayed out of it.

My other sibling has almost no relationship with my parents and doesn’t want one. None of the three of us are married or have children.

My mother told me that when they die, their house and everything in it will go to my oldest sibling. The house is probably worth around $300k. My other sibling will receive whatever money they have in their bank accounts, life insurance, retirement accounts, etc. My parents aren’t wealthy, but it will likely be at least six figures.

And then there is me.

I’m the youngest. I’m the one who navigates difficult conversations. I organize every family dinner and every holiday. I’m everyone’s therapist. Every other year I take my parents on a road trip because they don’t like flying but love sightseeing. I’m the emergency contact. I’m the medical wrangler.

My mom told me that what I’m getting is responsibility for their medical decisions because they trust me the most to “do what’s right by them.”

My dad recently had spinal surgery. My oldest brother, who lives with them and will inherit the house, barely visited him in the hospital. My other brother only went because I drove him. When my dad went to a medical rehab facility, neither visited. Neither went to a single appointment. I did. And apparently because I was so good at it, they trust me to keep doing it until the end.

For some context, my parents were neglectful and physically and emotionally abusive when we were growing up. They forgot to enroll me in school until the state intervened. One of my siblings slept on the floor throughout his childhood because they refused to buy him a bed. My father stole my car, sold it, and bought himself a new car the next day. I don’t think my mother could name a single teacher I had or school I attended.

And yet I spent most of my life making excuses for them, even when I was a child. For some reason, this conversation finally sent me over the edge.

I told my mom that what she’d said about the will hurt me. I also told her it was her responsibility to tell my brothers what they had decided. I wasn’t going to organize a family dinner or meeting so I could facilitate that conversation for them too.

And, because apparently this conversation wasn’t bizarre enough, she told me all of this while I was driving her to visit extended family.

Afterward, she looked at me and said I looked so run down that she thought I might have cancer and was refusing to tell them. Apparently my dad and oldest brother have been discussing the possibility that I have cervical cancer because I “look like shit.” I do not have cancer.

Then she laughed.

I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to feel at this point. I’m hurt by the inheritance, yes, but I think I’m more hurt by what it revealed about how my family sees me. My brothers get the tangible things, and I get entrusted with the responsibility of caring for the people who hurt me because I’m the one who can handle it.

I can’t have a normal conversation about any of this with my family because everyone is so emotionally unstable, so outside perspective is welcome. How would you handle this? Am I wrong for feeling like something in me has fundamentally changed after this conversation?

It’s not about the money. But I think that’s all they will see if I’m upset by this.

Hollywood loves to wrap things up with a nice bow, uplifting music, and smiling characters to make the audience feel good on their way out of the theater. But sometimes, if you look past the cinematic triumph of the final scene, the actual reality of what the characters are left with is an absolute nightmare.

The Truman Show is a perfect example. The movie ends on this massive, soaring high note as Truman takes a bow and steps through the door into the real world. But when you actually think about his future, it is terrifying. He is stepping into a world he knows absolutely nothing about, with zero real-life survival skills, where millions of strangers are unhealthily obsessed with him. It is a psychological tragedy disguised as a victory.

Shaun of the Dead does this too. The ending plays out like a fun, return-to-normal sitcom wrap-up where he gets his girlfriend back and plays video games. But in reality, the zombie apocalypse actually happened, most of their loved ones were brutally eaten alive, and they are keeping their zombified best friend chained up in a shed. The trauma they would be dealing with is unimaginable.

What is a movie ending that felt like a massive victory on the first watch, but completely falls apart into a tragedy once you actually analyze the characters' future?
