Work/Life balance Boss requiring me to attend a mandatory meeting, seeming to be unpaid; Looking for advice.

Hello everyone, I'm looking for some advice on what I should do next. To give some context I had a family emergency that required me to miss a day. I have been at this job for 2 months, the job is a midnight shift stocking shelves. I work with one other person during my shift, hes been working there for 2 years and is always complaining about how our boss is managing the store and how he treats him, recently I had to miss a day due to a family emergency which ended up me unfortunately calling out. I'm going to share images of our conversation.

More information about my aunt's situation (the family emergency), she was getting kicked out where she was living suddenly so I had to go help her pack her things and move practically everything, she has some sort of scoliosis in her back and recently diagnosed with breast cancer, she starts panting just going up 12 or so stairs. No one else in the family helped her. I don't regret my decision.

Now the only concern I have right now is whats going to happen at this meeting and if hes going to violate my labor rights. It doesn't seem like hes going to pay me and if I don't attend I'm worried he'll fire me.

At this point he has ignored my message.

If you have any suggestions that I should talk to him about or any advice on what I should do I'm open to hearing it, and also did I do anything wrong? Am I in the wrong?

I've missed a total of 2 days. First day being in a lot of pain + sleep deprived.

Fyi I live in the state of Idaho and I'm paid hourly.

Thank you.

Edit: also my coworker also says that our boss only expects us to miss 1 day in a year. Which I personally find wild. I'm going to audio record my meeting with him if I do end up going.

Edit 2: I live in a small town with very little job opportunities, not trying to lose the job but also I hate being mistreated, very conflicting feelings.

*******Edit 3: Firstly I'd like to thank all of you for commenting, I appreciate the time you have dedicated towards commenting. After reading 2 hours worth of comments 10 hours after it was posted I'd like to make a few clarifications, Every time I'm at work I get the job done with my coworker on avg 2 hours before our official clock out time, I've never mistreated anyone poorly at my job. My coworker has called out 3 times in 1 month when I first started, which gives me hope on not being fired.

Also I didn't think trying to reschedule a better meeting time that worked for both of us was a bad idea, I was trying to think about his schedule and mine.

I did get all social cues from his texts and did understand the severity of the situation, my way of going about it might have been a bad decision.

I was just wondering since I was coming in on a day off if I'd be getting paid, I didn't think the question was a bad one and this is what I was mostly wondering about, if asking was a bad idea.

From what I'll take from you all is this,

  1. Dont over explain
  2. Go in and apologize and explain why I thought it was important to me to help my aunt
  3. I'll be sure to conduct myself differently when faced with a similar situation like this
  4. I've already gone ahead and applied for 1 other job since thats all that is hiring around me, (interview went very well btw, just 2 week notice at current job might have thrown it off due to his hiring time restraints)
  5. Since idaho is a 1 side consent party I'm going to audio record the meeting
  6. Im going to a military recruiter after the meeting

I'll update you guys on how the meeting turns out, I also believe I'll be fired however I have hope!*******

I get that some jobs require constant staffing, but isn't it the supervisors job to deal with that? This is my typical response to one of my crew. (Also by recipes he meant receipts)

Job searching At what point is “THIS job market” just the normal job market?

I constantly hear about “in this THIS job market”…but the job market has been bad seemingly since about 2022. At what point does this just become the normal job market?

Applications 80+ applications in 6 days and only 1 interview is this normal?

How many applications did it take you to get an interview?

I just got laid off, and in the past 6 days I’ve submitted roughly 80 resumes/applications for positions I’m qualified for. So far, I’ve only had one company express interest in moving forward with an initial phone interview.

I’m curious what everyone else’s experience has been. How many jobs did you apply to before getting your first interview? Or are you also applying like crazy and not getting much interest yet?

Just trying to get a sense of what’s normal in the current job market.

Compensation Are Wages Decreasing?

I've been looking for a transition for the past year or so in a variety of different sectors (state government, educational institutions), and the salary offered range seems to be going down. I've also seen hourly jobs where the wages are going down beyond the 15$ minimum that seemed to be the norm a few years ago. I'm in Florida, but was wondering if this is happening elsewhere? There's too many examples now for me to dismiss it as mere coincidence in my area.

Career planning I’m 29 and can’t find a job anywhere, feel like a social leach, and truly don’t know what to do anymore.

So I’m on the cusp of Gen Z and live in the South East US, and I’m in one of the supposedly “best cities for young working people”, and I truly can’t find anything and truly don’t see my life going anywhere. I have a business management degree and a double minor in economics and accounting, class of ‘22. I have had the same part time job since 2020 and I am broke broke. Like my bank account will be shut down because it has 0 dollars and 0 cents in it kind of broke. Yes I know I should be saving but I come home with around 120-200 bucks every two weeks at best. It’s the ONLY income I have that is mine and allows me to have any kind of life or hobbies and to develop as a person. My family is very strict about what they will and won’t pay for. Right now things only seem to be getting worse. I am not on the schedule at work for the next month or so because hours at work are getting cut back severely for everybody including the full timers. I live at home with my parents and have never lived on my own since graduating college. I don’t know what more I can do outside of cold applying, asking friends for referrals, and networking, all of which I have been doing since graduating in ‘22. My school also shut down operations because of bad investments and mismanagement a few years after graduating so I can’t really use any of my colleges services and networks to find work anymore either. I feel stuck and worthless and like a leech to my family and friends. I don’t know how anyone else our age handles all of this. How are yall handling it all? Should I just give up? How do I even give up? I just feel insane and awful right now. How are the other older Gen Z handling this?? Any advice yall can give me? Because I feel truly stuck and like I’m rotting from the inside. I really don’t want to get into more debt going back to school for something else that might not work out again. This feels like my last chance to launch any kind of successful career or achieve stability in my life and possibly be and act like an actual adult and not just an overgrown teenager.

Interviews Gobsmacked. Applicants more qualified than managers

Currently interviewing candidates for a mid-level research role at a biotech company and the shortlisted ones are overwhelmingly overqualified. Not just exceeding all the essential and desired skills, they all have more work experience than my manager who will be overseeing their work 🥹

For context, we are interviewing to replace my colleague who got the role after she dropped out of her PhD. Three years later, this candidate cohort all have phds and 3+ years experience.

This is worrying not only because it reflects the reality of the current job market but also because I don’t think these applicants would become long term valuable assets to the company. With this experience, they will leave in a year for something better and we’d have to rehire.

Applications Got a new job in only a month and a few days!

I'm back with a new update!

If you saw my previous post from March, I shared that I had been searching for a job since May of last year before landing my most recent one as a Campaign Manager in March this year.

Well, long story short, I was unfortunately let go from that job at the end of June without any warning or PIP/performance issues (seriously, fuck at-will employment). That kickstarted another job search which, this time, lasted only a month and ten days. I was able to interview for my new role last Monday and was offered the job the next day! This was specifically thanks to my previous role and the robust skills I built up in the two months working as a CM, along with my previous experience working in my state's legislature and on a committee in Capitol Hill.

As for the specific job I just accepted, I will be working as a Fellow for an office in my state government!

Career planning Help me navigate this situation, please

I had the ideal job. I worked remotely as a paralegal, and only went in to court for actual trial days that weren't WEB-EX, which was important for my living situation.

My attorney, towards the end, started messing up big time. Missing deadlines. (Not my fault. I would be on the phone with him at 11:30 begging him to submit our documents -- that I had prepared-- before midnight. He would be drunk. I would be in tears.)

I had to resign out of ethics. He ended up being sued for Malpractice.

Clients asked me for documentation that I was legally required to produce, and also, it proved I had diligently done my part. Attorney ended up paying hundreds of thousands in malpractice judgments.

I was really good at my job. I can not use my former boss as a reference for obvious reasons.

How can I secure other similar employment. I have over 14 years experience

Post-interview Had an interview a few days ago and waiting for a job offer. Wish me luck!

Well, I went to an interview a few days ago and things went pretty well. Had a tour of some of the facilities there. I am just really hoping that things line up well. I'll have an answer by Tuesday at the latest and the anticipation is killing me.

I'm tired of doing nothing all day. I'm tired of not having money. Tired of sleeping outside and waking up to bugs crawling on me. This jobs pays pretty decently and getting this job would allow me to start living my life again. I want to live. I am 25 years old I am so tired of wasting my 20s surviving like this. I want to take care of myself again.

If I could just get this job... even if I work only 20 hours a week it can at least get me headed in the right direction. Making some money is better than making none.

That's all, I just wanted to vent because I'm feeling a lot right now and this job is a golden opportunity to turn my life around.

Contract work Getting paid well but micromanaged into the ground... Do I stick it out?

So I'm in a weird spot and I don't really know what to do... really having a hard time making a desicion here.

The money is good, around $5k, which is honestly the main reason I'm here. But the level of micromanagement is starting to get to me (it's been less than a week). I was handed a couple of things with basically zero guidance, and instead of actually walking me through anything, the response is just "overcommunicate" Which, sure, but I'm also still trying to figure the thing out. Hard to give a detailed update on something nobody explained to me in the first place.

I keep going back and forth on whether it's me. Maybe I'm not asking the right questions. Maybe I'm too used to working with more autonomy. But it genuinely doesn't feel like an environment I can survive long-term, and I don't want to burn out chasing a paycheck... need some good advice at this point.

Has anyone been here? Did it get better once you got up to speed, or is this just what the place is like? Do I ride it out for the money or start looking?

Job searching Overqualified usually means they are worried you will not stay

Overqualified sounds nicer than a normal rejection, but I would not treat it like praise.

Most of the time it means the company sees a risk they do not want to carry. Maybe they think the pay is too low for you. Maybe the title is smaller than your last one. Maybe they assume you will leave as soon as a better role opens. Sometimes they just do not believe you actually want the job.

That is why arguing that you can do the work usually misses the point. They already believe that part.

The better thing to address, if you still want the role, is the worry underneath it:

  • why this smaller role makes sense for you right now
  • why the pay or schedule works without resentment
  • why you are not using it as a two-month landing pad

You do not need to beg or pretend your experience is less than it is. But if the role is genuinely intentional, say that clearly before they fill in the story for you.

Work/Life balance How do you deal with working 9-5/8-5 after college?

Upvotes

I recently finished my first internship. It was enjoyable work, but I would work from about 7:30/8:00 am to 5:00 pm sometimes later due to the carpool situation and it was hard.

After my first 12 and a half hour day I started wondering how people could work like this and still have a good work life balance. I feel like after a 40 hour work week my productivity at home goes down (I come home tired and will be fatigued on the weekends from the hours and lack of sleep).

Ive seen people online complaining about how the 8-6 is becoming more ubiquitous, and I was just wondering how people dealt with that. How do you maintain a personal life separate from work? And how do you still manage to take care of your physical and mental health when working?

I really felt like this internship has impacted my perspective on the whole 9-5 experience and makes me nervous for when it’s not ‘just for the summer.‘ I was just coming home tired and wasn’t able to pursue hobbies because I was too fatigued. I feel like even when i was at school for 8-9 hours in high school I didn’t get like this…

Thank you

Work/Life balance Loosing a work buddy

So as the title says I’m in danger of loosing my work buddy. He hates the shift he hates the lead and he hates the policies corporate has. We go out on break and I listen to his crash outs but I work in a different area and don’t deal with what he does. He’s also younger than me and hasn’t quite figured out not to give it your all everyday.

I tried telling him every place will be similar, tried telling him the job market is shit right now and I even tried telling him to toogle his performance. But I fear all my advice is falling on deaf ears. I don’t want him to quit or go to days but I don’t think I can say anything to get him to stay. What would yall do???

Job searching It's been two months of being unemployed and I don't see myself getting a job anytime soon

To start, I guess I'm just here venting about the job market. I live in Houston and moved from Dallas two months ago because my boyfriend got a job opportunity. Me on the other hand, have been looking for work since my boyfriend felt like he was going to get his job since we'd be moving.

I don't have a degree, but it seems like even the most low-effort jobs either aren't actually hiring, nor want me. I put in multiple applications, followed up, and re-did my resume from scratch. All I've been getting is rejections.

I would door dash but I don't have a car, my boyfriend is the only one who does (long story short when I moved from the north my car wouldn't have made the drive, and he needs his car for his job.) I feel like I'm losing hope for getting a job and I'm not really sure what my next step is. It feels like most jobs are looking for bilingual people (which I'm not.) Or having expectations that I can't meet. I'm still looking, trying to look for remote positions which I'm not sure how that will go. I feel horrible that my boyfriend is paying for everything right now and I can't do anything about it.

TLDR; cannot find a job no matter how hard I'm trying, don't have transportation to do delivery jobs and trying to find remote work if possible

Unemployment partner is unemployed - how to support?

Hi all - my partner has been unemployed for about 6 months now & is absolutely miserable. Thankfully I am still employed, but I know they’re feeling like a burden, & they’ve said themselves they’ve never felt this low. I love them deeply but don’t really know how to support them right now. I’d like to hear from the community of how your friends, family, & significant others have helped you during your (seemingly unending) job search - it’s breaking my own heart to see them feel so down and me not being able to actually do anything tangible to help. My heart is with everyone seeking a job right now!

Applications “Its easy to get a job, you just aren’t doing it right”

My grandparents are in their early to mid 70s…

My husband and I are in our early 20s...

Spent the weekend with them and there was much discussion of jobs and first time home owners.

My husband and I tried to explain that it’s hard to find a job. I was unemployed for about 3 months and struggled to find a job that paid over $15 an hour and was a day shift. Finally ended up having to have two barista jobs both paying $12 an hour and still not getting enough hours.

“it’s not that hard to find a job. You just don’t want a hard job. Go apply at a factory?”

yes it is grandpa. Yk how many openings there are at the factories near me that aren’t night shifts?? ZERO. I applied for housekeeping jobs at hotels and nursing homes, janitor jobs at hospitals and casinos, cashiers at gas stations, different positions at grocery stores, retail jobs, barista jobs, even applied to jobs that I knew I wouldnt get because I dont have the experience or degree just in case someone would hire me.

“people are always hiring.“

yeah, but who are they hiring? Nepotism, connections, age, gender, race, so many things go into play on who gets a job. I worked as a barista at one of the hotels I had applied to for housekeeping. Guess who worked the housekeeping jobs? All south asian and Hispanic women. Not a single white woman worked housekeeping there except for the head housekeeper lady. My husband applied to thousands of jobs before he finally walked around town and tried to give people his resume in person. One super small company accepted him.

I told my grandma: “if I applied to a part time receptionist job (which I did) are they going to choose me over the mid 30s woman with 2 kids? No…“

my grandma then replied “it’s probably because they think she would be more reliable since she’s older.”

THATS WHY ITS HARD TO FIND A JOB AS A YOUNG PERSON GRANDMA!!!

I worked with a woman in her mid 30s and had 3 kids at home. This woman came into work drunk and fell asleep in the lobby and in the break room ON THE CLOCK while I worked and did my job. But go ahead, choose who you’re hiring based off age.

”I went to a fast food place the other day and there was a woman my age working on a saturday! where are the kids working? they should be working that!” said my grandpa.

yeah, they should be working there. but they won’t hire them.

my grandma even replied that they probably assume the old lady is more reliable than a high schooler.

“theres plenty of houses you could buy. Theres a lot of cheap ones in *tiny town with no jobs for my husband and I and nothing for us to do*”

ok… what jobs are there for us then? are there jobs for my husband who is a computer science major and wants to expand his career in that?

”there’s trucking jobs. he can go drive a truck and get a bunch of money”

….yeah, Id love to live in a town that makes me depressed with a depressed husband that isn’t able to get a job that will fulfill him just so we can have a house… that will definitely make our lives so much better.

crazy thing is that they have a son, my uncle, who has never owned a home. he and my aunt have lived in large cities because that’s where the jobs for him are. they didn’t buy a house and lived in apartments because that’s the kind of life they were living. He’s a fricking law professor. what would happen with my uncle if my grandpa gave him the same advice he’s giving my husband?? my husband is very smart and wants to get his masters someday. it’s not going to happen if he works for a trucking company. If the trucking company would even hire a computer science graduate with no experience in trucking.…

Im sorry, its just so annoying.

like my mother works at dicks sporting goods right now. she’s 44. my grandma was probably not working at 44 or was working at my grandpas law office as a receptionist...

my grandpa also kept going on about how I should try to apply to be an office lady at a car dealership… my husbands dad is a manager or something at a dealership and explained to my grandpa that a lot of the time it’s a pretty family business. my grandpa just replied that “I doubt the lady in the back typing in information is someone’s daughter there.” well, I highly doubt I’ll get her job with no experience in that field grandpa.

at one point in February I applied to like 50 at home customer service jobs and got no response from anyone. Guess what I got in my email yesterday! An email telling me that theyd like to continue my application! Only like 7 months later! yeah… I have a job already…

end of rant. sorry.

I will be praying for all of you that are struggling with finding a job rn. it absolutely sucks. right now I’m ripping out year old smoke and bed bug ridden carpet and painting booger and smoke walls of an apartment that was lived in for 12 years. I’m super grateful for it though.

good luck to all and don’t give up!

Edit: when I mentioned minorities and moms I am not saying “they’re stealing my jobs!!!!! Ahhhh!!” My examples are just to explain that people have preferences on who they hire and they will stick to those rather than go outside of their “comfort zone.”

Contract work My boss stopped giving me work, replaced me, and now won’t respond about my final pay.

Post image
15 Upvotes

I was working full time as a Product Designer, but a few weeks ago my boss told me he wanted to switch things from full time to project based. So I basically went from having 40 hours of work every week to a completely different setup.

I wasn't happy about losing the stability, but I understood and agreed.

The problem is, since then there's been almost no work.

Since I was being paid hourly, I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to work on so I could at least get some hours in for the month. He told me there was nothing.

Funny enough, I was mistakenly added to a group where I realized they had hired someone else to do pretty much the same work I was doing.

That's honestly fine with me. If I'm no longer in your plans, just tell me. It sucks, but that's life and I'll move on.

What is frustrating me is the silence.

The month ended and I asked if I could at least be paid for the work I did that month. Whatever he could provide would help me settle some bills.

No response.

I waited a few days and followed up. Still nothing.

I even sent another message asking if I could use some of the work I did for them in my portfolio. Still nothing.

I'm trying really hard not to keep texting him because I don't want to come across as annoying or like I'm begging. I just want some clarity. If I'm no longer needed, tell me. If you can't pay me right now, tell me that too.

Being left hanging without knowing where I stand is the frustrating part.

I've been applying for other jobs and doing everything I can on my end, but the last few days have been rough.

At this point I genuinely don't know whether I should message him again or just take the silence as my answer and move on.

Job searching people who accepted a job offer despite a disorganised interview process, how did it turn out?

I often hear people say that the interview process is a reflection of how a company operates internally.

Have you ever gone through an interview process where things felt disorganised? Like interviews being rescheduled just hours before coming into the office, interviewers seeming unprepared, or there being very little enthusiasm from the team?

If you still ended up getting an offer and taking the job, how did it turn out?

Was the company actually better than the interview process made it seem, or did those early signs of disorganisation end up being genuine red flags?
