Taylor farms seems to have zero health controls.

u/EddieCheddar88 7h ago
Well they lobbied to end most food inspections on site while their Mexico plant seems to be a bastion of disease

Those regulations are what allow the public to trust their products. Now, without them, we have to avoid their foods to protect ourselves.

They have had issues with livestock runoff contaminating crops with disease for at least 20 years. They have done less than nothing to fix it. In fact, they have decided instead to reduce health sanitary further, since they have determined it's cheaper to pay republicans off than to implement sanitary measures.

Hey that's part of how the dumb/lazy southerner trope came to be
Turns out having human shit in fields you tend barefoot causes hookworms worms and all the poor southerners were doing this. 40% of southerners were dumb from being constantly anemic, bloated, and exhausted from hookworm infestations
Edit: hookworms not brainworms

Well damn. I was curious how the poopoo bugs got in there to the extent such a large scale contamination could happen. Maybe just a water supply issue or something. The thing is, it’s not even the farm. They’re going to blame this on harvesting. It’s very clearly in preparation. Whatever equipment they’re using to chop, mix, blend, whatever - is just filthy.
You have a major food handle that things it’s more important to churn out batches of shit, than to simply wash the goddamn equipment.
179
u/TrimspaBB 7h ago
Yup, it's this. People keep blaming lack of hygiene for the field workers but it goes beyond that, as evidenced by how widespread this all is. Their chopping plant water and equipment is dirty and they're refusing to clean it properly.

Their chopping plant water and equipment is dirty and they're refusing to clean it properly.
Because they don't have to. The Trump/Republican administration cut safety regulations early on in this term, because those pesky safety regulations decrease profit margins by 0.00000% for their rich donor friends.
On top of gutting the agencies for inspecting and enforcing said regulations. This is just going to get worse.
These farms, factories and meat processing plants are going to make BoarsHead facilities look clean.

It’s happened to one of their growers in the past—it was a smaller family owned farm and they ended up having to spend millions on new processing equipment. They were never able to trace what was contaminated.

This is the funniest shit ever as a non-american. Like, the company with slave labour in the US just bribes the FDA (or what agency is in charge of this) to remove required checking and literally months later there's multiple massive virus and bacteria outbreaks from that specific company. If the US was a real country there'd be criminal charges of bribery for the company officials and the FDA officials and whoever else was involved rather than just a series of class action lawsuits from civil plaintiffs.

I always found it funny growing up in DC, I knew so many completely normal people who worked for the government doing the type of mundane or obscure jobs that keep the country running behind the scenes - people working with the weather balloons that make our weather forecasts better, a paper bill quality control guy at the bureau of engraving and printing, someone who works on vehicle safety recall programs at NHTSA, a veteran funeral services coordinator, a head start preschool teacher - hearing from the rest of the country that all of these people are supposedly 1. evil and 2. useless is infuriating. They’re the fish who doesn’t notice the water because it’s all they know; my coworker who hates “the government” and drinks raw milk because of RFK also happens to enjoy all of the fruits of living in a developed country with a semi-competent bureaucracy like air travel and highway safety standards, the standardization of weights and measures, a postal system that delivers lots of his Amazon packages, food labeling laws, I could go on…

50
u/DAVENP0RT 7h ago
Fines are meaningless and restitution will never come. At some level, there are people that should be charged. Taylor Farms has been confirmed as the source of infection that has killed multiple people and factory farms need to be sent a message that allowing tainted food to enter the market will result in prison time.
The fact that the CEO almost certainly bribed the Trump administration to sweep it under the rug is a separate and wholly worse situation. Dude should be imprisoned for the rest of his fucking life.
Of course, none of that will happen either because we live in a capitalist hellscape where death is an inconvenience on the road to billionaire status.

I think they don't care about us and have enough money to make the issue go away without legal consequences.
This goes back to the Friedman Doctrine Law that corporations must prioritize profit since the 1920s. It still hasn't been rewritten and is responsible for leaded gas in the 1900s and for 90% of the shit in the US right.
Basically, corporations have a legal obligation to prioritize money, specifically money for shareholders, over everything else, including employee and human rights. Many CEOs are clinical psychopaths and happy to do that anyway and use the "law" as an excuse anytime a lawsuit is thrown at them. The law needs to change or shit like this will just continue to happen.

This is a critical failure of having monopolistic grocery/ag. One company's disaster means our entire food chain is experiencing that disaster. You can't even simply buy lettuce from Company B if no grocers around you carry it, or there's so few that everyone is rushing for the same stuff. So we just don't get any lettuce until things are declared "normal" again.
Like you can't get more demonstrative than this regarding how oligarchy makes us all suffer.

If only we had a functioning government with an agency to oversee our food sources.

As it turns out, having the FDA regularly inspecting food production facilities and fining those facilities out of compliance was a good thing. Who’d have thought.

Fast food is not worth the risk.
Now apparently store bought lettuce and jalapeños are not worth the risk.
Some of this I can avoid (fast food is easy- I just don’t eat out). I can grow my own lettuce and jalapeños. That’s what I do in the summer anyway. Just canned two half pints of cowboy candy (jalapeños) tonight after dinner. I still have plenty of pressure canned jalapeños from last year. Between the two, I think I have enough jalapeños to avoid buying from the grocery store. I tend to grow arugula in the heat of the summer for lettuce.
I’ll be growing more of a fall and winter garden this year.
But I won’t be growing corn, or vast quantities of berries. I have a crap ton of raspberry plants, but my pups found them and check the area daily for any ripe fruit. My honeycrisp apple tree is still young and has less than a dozen apples on it this year. If I want these items, I have to go buy them.
I much prefer to use tax dollars to employ the experts that keep an eye on corporations to make sure they’re not making us sick. Sigh.

Wow.
I have to give it to the Trump administration. I thought ICE was the war on immigrants. This fucking regime is now going after the entire supply line for Mexican food. No lettuce, no jalapeños, no guacamole, no salsa. How long until we find our tortillas are also unsafe, or tomatoes? Just kill the whole fucking taqueria line.
America sucks so much ass.

How convenient! Now I can get all my diarrhea lettuce from the same place I get all my salmonella dips from! Thanx for looking out, Taylor Farms!

Kinda seems like Taylor Farms needs to be taken out behind the barn at this point. Good grief.

I guess we're another 'visit to the Whitehouse by the Taylor Farms CEO' from the FDA claiming that it's all false positives, huh?

Do they have to pay trump for each new item that poisons people or did their initial payment cover the salsa and guacamole as well as the lettuce?

Oh my god you're shitting me. No really, you're shitting me.
The same fucking company caused multiple types of potentially lethal explosive diarrhea infections across the US twice in a row?
Are they going to follow it up with a nation-wide swath of c. Diff or what exactly? How do you top the crypto/e. Coli combo? Was this their peak or what?

Friendly reminder that you can identify Taylor Farms products by looking at the production code stamped right next to the "Best By" or expiration date on the package. Letters like TF, TFRS, TFRB, or TFPM indicate the item was packed at a Taylor Farms facility, even on store-brand or private-label products.
