You don't go to the gym for the girls. You go to the gym for you.

The girls come when they see how happy you are with yourself.

381

u/Aurrroor 4h ago

The real gains were the self-confidence you built along the way. The girls were never part of the program 😭

u/Tigt0ne 3h ago

I got back on the wagon and lost 30lbs. My wife complains I'm too little now. My boys at the gym? They see me and appreciate my hard work.

Can't win em all.

47

u/Weird_Angry_Kid 3h ago

You lost fat and now you gotta replaced it with muscle, it's time to bulk up. Your wife wants you to be big.

25

u/SPRMOVRLRD-TMOperaO 3h ago

Yeah she wants her cuddly bear back, who's she gonna hug when she sleeps now? A pillow?/s

Not quite the same but I've trimmed down about 5kg whilst adding muscle mass and apart from a throwaway comment from the wife all my love comes from the guys in the gym and my mates who notice the difference.

I wasn't doing it for female attention at all, but made me laugh that it's all male attention I'm getting.

5

u/Googleitgenius 2h ago

But ...but...goog- "The statement that "every 20-30 lbs of extra weight can result in up to 1/2 inch [of] penis length" is substantially accurate regarding visible length, though medical sources often cite a slightly higher weight threshold for a full inch of gain. " ;p

That self confidence turns slowly into body dysmorphia as you go deeper down the lifting rabbit hole

98

u/Beautiful-Aerie7576 4h ago

They also leave when you get too buff, but in my experience that also often correlates with folks who are never happy with themselves.

Not being shady. Love my big gym bros. But some have serious body image issues, I won’t pretend that’s not true.

65

u/BustyCrustaceans011 4h ago

Sounds less about them getting too buff and more about them being constantly dissatisfied with their personal image/body. Seems kinda like anorexia but the opposite.

35

u/Boudi04 My thumbs hurt 4h ago

I've heard the term bigorexia to describe this actually. It's definitely a thing.

8

u/S-Tier_Commenter 2h ago

It's funny, because anorexia comes from Greek for "no hunger". Bigorexia should be megalo-orexia, for big hunger.

3

u/Drama79 2h ago

Manorexia has been around forever. Male body dysmorphia and eating disorders are massive, but under-reported still. Thankfully there's an increased awareness these days.

And as someone irritating online pointed out - men work out for other men. Women don't care. The focus should always be "does this make me feel better about myself and/or my health". If it starts negatively affecting either, you need to course correct.

30

u/Jiujitsumonkey707 3h ago

Body dysmorphia comes in all shapes and sizes unfortunately

11

u/Beautiful-Aerie7576 3h ago

That was that was what I was trying to convey with my second paragraph, yeah, I agree.

It’s almost exactly like anorexia, in fact. One qualifying symptom of anorexia is an unhealthy drive to exercise for excessive periods of time, and the eating for bodybuilders is like an ED guide for men. A lot of them have an obsession with keeping their body fat percentage low as well. The qualifiers are almost identical.

3

u/NewSauerKraus 2h ago

A lot of bodybuilder literally have eating disorders too. Boiled chicken and white rice every day because seasoning adds a nanogram of carbs or as self-punishment.

The issue isnt usually with you being too buff... Its that in order to get that buff, your life becomes about the gym.

You eat and breathe fitness content, and aometimes she just wants a pizza and a shitty movie :p

4

u/Yashema 3h ago

They also don't really care if you have more than a moderately fit body (aka the dad bod), especially if you are taking college educated types. It's really your unalterable physical appearance that determine how attractive women find you.

15

u/Nickulator95 3h ago

Going to the gym doesn't make me happy. I'm perfectly satisfied with how I already look.

Doing what makes me happy, gaming and making music, hasn't made any girls interested in me.

Conclusion: I'm just too ugly or don't deserve to ever be loved.

12

u/GrayMech 3h ago

They never said going to the gym will make you happy. They said you go to the gym for you and that the girls come when they see how happy you are with yourself. Two separate statements. Going to the gym for yourself is going to make sure you're healthy and in shape, for some people that brings them happiness but even if it doesn't directly bring you happiness, I'm sure being able to do the other things you love with ease without worrying about your physical health would bring you joy, idk tho I'm just a guy on Reddit, what do I know

2

u/Estropolim 21m ago

Yes, and he just pointed out that the second statement is false, because he is happy with himself and girls aren't coming.

5

u/nonotan 2h ago

Gaming is unlikely to help, but making music can definitely help attract girls (unless you're focusing on a genre that is a sausage fest, I guess)

Anyway, the whole self-confidence angle is really just a proxy for being pleasant to be around. People with low self-confidence can definitely be downers, exude desperation, become clingy, etc, all of which drives people away. But the opposite extreme (people full of themselves) can be just as bad for your social life. Yet there are plenty of people on both ends who are actually great to be around, it's ultimately just correlation, not something inevitable.

Just be nice to be around, avoid being manipulative to try to get the result you want (no matter what variety of manipulation, people can tell), look like you can take care of yourself (not even talking about going to the gym, just don't look or smell like a hobo, don't be morbidly obese, etc), and put yourself in situations where you at least have the chance to interact with people of your preferred gender; they aren't going to come looking for you (or hit it so big with your music people do come knocking, I suppose, but that seems harder)

Sure, how naturally handsome you are will have a big effect on how many of those you interact with end up finding you attractive enough to date or w/e, but that's not something you can control, so no point worrying about it. In any case, you don't need a large percentage of the population to actively want to date you -- finding a couple of people who subjectively like you well enough is a very low barrier that can be met by virtually everybody, no matter how "hideous" (turns out people have very different tastes)

2

u/Capital_Past69 2h ago

The girls see how happy you are playing with yourself and then they flock to you

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Weird_Angry_Kid 3h ago

It's the belief that you are ugly and don't deserve to be loved that makes girls not be interested in you.

3

u/CallMeOaksie 1h ago

This feels super dishonest. Like especially if you’re starting from a position of being physically unattractive. Like “women don’t find you attractive but if you dare to take their opinion seriously then that’s what actually made you unattractive” you seem to be missing the concept that people’s personalities and self image are always shaped on the way other people view them. It genuinely comes across like you’ve got the whole thing backwards. People don’t find someone unattractive because that person believes themselves to be unattractive, that person believes themself to be unattractive because other people find them unattractive.

5

u/Haerrlekin 2h ago

This. My big turning point was probably just a few months after I had started exercising more. I was eating better, feeling better, and had more money in my pocket because I was eating out less.

By that point I had already started getting more attention from women but hadn't really registered it enough to make the connection until my mom made a comment over dinner.

She told me I smiled more often now, and I realized she was right. I'd been smiling and laughing a lot more often. Telling more jokes, singing along to music, and just being happy.

And it clicked all at once that I was treating myself better, and so I was happier. And because I was happier, more people were interested in me.

I did it for me, and me is who it benefited. It just had a secondary benefit of making other people interested as well. Suddenly, even my niche hobbies and interests that nobody gives a shit about became interesting to people because I was having fun talking about them.

My current girlfriend I pulled by yapping her ear off for like 45 minutes about Sonic lore while killing time on the train home for work (she had a keychain and I thought it was cute so I commented on it.)

She gave me her number and asked to chat again. We've been going steady for about 6 months now.

So yeah, being happy is attractive. And having interests is also attractive. And shame/disgust with oneself is very, very unattractive- however sympathetic that cause might be.

3

Girls come when you get a good job :) Better both, gym and a good job.

3

u/Kitsui38 3h ago

The first part is true. The second is another lie

3

u/IlluminaViam 2h ago

Being happy with yourself doesn't mean staying in the comfort zone too. Gym bros can be some of the most awkward and shy people around women.

3

u/Scorpion2k4u 2h ago

and the guys posting gym pics are doing it for other guys not girls. They just often don't realize that.

5

u/mbnmac 3h ago

If you're goign tot he gym for an aesthetic, it's for men.

Gym bros are unironically partaking in gay culture, whether they know it or not when they're getting buff to attract a partner.

3

u/TemoteJiku 2h ago

Beauty is a concept that goes further than that, so even in isolated cases, it's not true. Otherwise most things would be pretty one dimensional.

2

u/GoodBlob 1h ago

Why is Reddit always trying to convince me that being physically attractive doesn’t attract people?

5

u/knightsofgel 1h ago

Getting physically fit at the gym will certainly make you more attractive and is only a positive but at the end of the day if you have a shit personality, are weird/awkward, uninteresting, and have a shitty career then getting buff isn’t going to overcome that

2

u/GoodBlob 1h ago

I get being weird/awkward as a dealbreaker, but I’ve seen people with some terrible personalities being flawless with woman. In fact, I would go as far as saying violent/emotional types are better with woman in general where I’m from

2

u/knightsofgel 1h ago

Maybe they’re more interesting with better jobs and faces too.

It’s all multilayered and complicated

2

u/user-the-name 43m ago

Confidence. Lots of terrible people are also confident. And that is the one biggest thing that works.

2

u/CallMeOaksie 1h ago

What if you can’t be happy with yourself until you’ve been loved romantically? Are you just stuck in the permanent “you need a job for experience, but you need experience for a job” loop?

2

u/Octoboy1 1h ago

Girls don't care how in shape in you are. The other gym bros do though

I was at the beach with my Mrs the other week and I saw this guy, huge, jacked, walking protein factory. I was in awe

I nudged my Mrs, "look at this fucking guy!" She glanced up once and said "oh yeah hes big" and then went back to her book. Didn't give a shit

My day however, was completely made

7

u/AlignmentProblem 3h ago

I had rather good success going from skinny-fat to kinda buff when I was younger, and it had a non-trivial effect on my dating success.

That said, I didn't turn into a cloud monster. Going from the bottom 25% most fit men in the average room to the top 25% was plenty. That's about the sweet spot before rapidly diminishing returns, and it's achievable within about a year of consistent effort for most men (assuming your diet is on-point). Pushing much further tends to be neutral or negative for heterosexual dating success.

3

u/Murky-Relation481 1h ago

Men vastly overestimate how much physical attraction plays in a woman's interest in a man. Yah don't be 400lbs but you don't even have to be that fit to gave good success if your personality is attractive. Being funny and smart and quick witted goes a long ways.

One very big lesson I've learned too late: girls don't like good looking guys. Girls like the CONFIDENCE of good looking guys. You can be ugly but confident - you will be swimming in girls (if you so desire).

I've seen the ugliest, dumbest assholes pull 9/10 girls just by being confident.

But don't mistake confidence with arrogance. Don't be arrogant.

2

u/Murky-Relation481 1h ago

You're describing a very small portion of gym goers. The majority of men (and women) go to the gym to stay healthy and to be and look fit. Taking care of your health and having some form of discipline is a character trait everyone should want in a partner.

2

u/TheLastofKrupuk 3h ago edited 3h ago

The manosphere have warped young male to think that being muscular = women. When the one with the biggest female fanbase are mostly twinks lmao.

Edit: since some of you obsess over the body too much. This is my hint that some of you need to learn how to groom yourself. Learn how to style your hair, how to dress up, do skincare, and how to use makeup. Plus you are going to have the same interest as your partner if you do this.

Going to the gym gets rid of the beer belly. Anything after that is diminishing return.

5

u/The_Grogfather 3h ago

This isn’t even a manosphere thing. A large percentage of women will prefer men who look fit and healthy, which muscles are usually indicative of. Just like a large percentage of men prefer women who look fit and healthy too

2

u/Murky-Relation481 57m ago

Prefer is a strong word and it's clear, your post included, that a lot of men project what matters to them in attraction on to women. If you're ripped but an unfunny dumb asshole you're going to have very slim pickings. Also most of those things are far easier to achieve success in than going to the gym for the average person.

If girls like guys who work out a lot then how come every couple I see is a 7-10 girl with a guy who is skinny but somehow looks pregnant ?

u/bestbefour 3h ago

Because you’re bitter and lonely.

u/bigeasy19 3h ago

Or they only see people on TV sitcoms

Rating people is gross. This is why you're alone. Looks aren't everything.

u/OrangeLightning235 4h ago

Tbh, the girls only want money, and they'll leave you once you get it, there are some who don't, but they're really hard to find.

A motorcycle will be better, but you should ride for yourself just as you should go to the gym for yourself

Dragon warrior

u/KomithErrant 4h ago

at the very least if you look better you gonna have more confidence, even if you don't pull that's not bad

u/PictureWestern5009 4h ago

Girls want a man who cares for himself protects himself who is confident healthy clean then they will understan you can provide the same for them

and GYM is key to all this

u/ConfidentAd3516 4h ago

Less than before I started actually.. really just doing it for me how lame.

As a theatre actor, the only reason I go is to look good and maintain my health. Honestly most of my relationships with girls are all friendships, and I am quite satisfied with that. I may not have a girlfriend currently, but I do have plenty of homegirls to call at a moments notice 😅. In cruel irony, often those truly not looking for love, are the ones who stumble upon it the most.

Funny enough instead of attracting girls it end up attracting the supportive and motivational Gym bro

1

u/Mr_Ignorant 3h ago

Going to the gym means you have a better body than before. But you still need to approach the women. They won’t just magically appear.

1

u/ColdCalculus 3h ago

Also. Me when I open the project documentation.

1

u/coco_melonFAN 3h ago

Funnily enough, big muscles are more likely to attract a man than a women.

I can speak from some experience as I am bisexual

There's a true crime podcast I like, and one of their best bits is when they are talking about the weirdest creepiest dudes, like a murderer is walking around for days with a dead bird in his pocket... and he has a girlfriend. If you don't, it's not women's fault, it's yours. Either become a better person, or lower your standards, find the kinda chick who's down with dead pocket birds.

u/Department-of-Wario 3h ago

Sadly there are no personality gyms. You have to figure that out on your own.

1

u/GuardaAranha 3h ago

Tbf , before going to the gym you were getting negative amount of girls and getting beat up just for looking goofy. So still an improvement.

1

u/ElDonute 3h ago

Funny enough I've actually gotten more... I'm not even buffed, I'm just lean and I have 2 currently drooling over me... At the same time. I didn't go to the gym for the girls either, I went because I don't want back pain in my 30s

1

u/n3t3r0 3h ago

Look carefully at the scroll, and you'll see then only person worthy of your love.

1

u/MegasVN69 3h ago

now check how many gym bro you pulled

1

u/Psychological_Dig592 3h ago

I never went to gym for pulling someone, I pull and push weights

1

u/Legal-Ad5998 3h ago

It's also what you stop doing....when you go to the gym you stop going to the bar, stop eating our, stop going to nightclubs

1

u/Faithless_Fate_21 3h ago

Hey, you feel lighter and better about yourself. You also developed as sense of discipline. Still a W for me bro
